Plastic Free Guelph
We are an organization advocating and educating towards a plastic free city. Did you know that in 2015 alone over one trillion single-use plastic bags were used around the world? At McDonalds alone, over 60 million single-use straws are used each and every day.
That means in the time it took you to read the previous paragraph (approximately 15 seconds) about 475 647 single-use plastic bags and 10 417 straws have been used.
In today’s society, when groups are meeting to discuss the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” and with booms in high-tech subjects as robotics and biotechnology, we still find ourselves using a century old method of bagging materials in plastics.
A recent study published by the World Economic Forum shows that nearly 70 per cent of plastic we produce is either landfilled or lost into the world’s waterways and other infrastructure.
Currently, plastic accounts for 6 per cent of global oil consumption, estimated to rise to 20 percent by 2050. Although plastic accounts for a minimal amount of our global carbon budget, the report states that by 2050, plastic will spend 15 per cent of our carbon budget, solely on pop bottles, plastic grocery bags and the like.
